TRI-STATE EXPO JUNETEENTH AFFAIRS AWARDED GRANT FOR DOTHAN'S FIRST JUNETEENTH PARADE MURAL

DOTHAN, AL (April 6, 2024) – Tri-State Expo Juneteenth Affairs, Inc. (TSE Juneteenth Affairs), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is thrilled to announce a $5,500 grant from the Alabama Power Foundation. These funds will be used to create a Juneteenth mural designed by renowned muralist E.L. Chisholm.

"We are incredibly grateful to the Alabama Power Foundation for their generous support," said Leah Gunn, current President of TSE Juneteenth Affairs. "This mural will not only celebrate Dothan's first Juneteenth parade but also serve as a permanent reminder of the community leaders who paved the way for this celebration."

The mural will commemorate Dothan's historic first Juneteenth parade, spearheaded by TSE Juneteenth Affairs under the leadership of then-President Evangeline Reynolds Gunn and the ACLU. Reynolds-Gunn, currently the organization's Executive Director of Programs, played a pivotal role in securing grant funding from Alabama Power and securing partnerships with PPG Paint, United Rentals, and Home Depot.

"This is truly an accomplishment by our organization as we hope to continue to increase cultural awareness within the City of Dothan, the Wiregrass, Alabama, and our neighbors just over the Florida and Georgia lines," says Reynolds-Gunn.

The mural, scheduled for completion in late May, will be erected in the Dixie Depot area, adding to its ongoing beautification efforts. It will also pay homage to the late Peggy James, a revered community activist and philanthropist. TSE Juneteenth Affairs extends its most profound appreciation to the Alabama Power Foundation for its continued commitment to fostering cultural equity within the Wiregrass Area.
