Dothan, AL —TSE Juneteenth Affairs, Inc. (TSEJA) proudly partners with the Boys and Girls Club of the Wiregrass to bring Film & Photography 101 sessions to youth members. Each class features local powerhouse film and photography experts, such as Short Stuff Photography Studio and Evergreen Creative Company.
The nonprofit aims for students to gain exposure to career paths within the film and photography fields and stimulate their interest in higher forms of visual art such as cinematography. The Boys and Girls Club of the Wiregrass' historic position of being a youth development program makes it a great choice for the pilot program.
From Short Stuff Photography Studio's Kishia C. Saffold, on September 20, 2024, student participants learned to experiment with imagery in the Lights & Shadow Session. After completing the dialogue portion of the class, students were able to test theories by creating 5-minute short films.
"Responses were extremely positive from the class and frankly overwhelming", says Evangeline Reynolds-Gunn, Executive Director of Programs for TSEJA. "The administration explained that the students were very excited about [Kishia C. Saffold's] the session and were ready for more."
On October 24, 2024, Evergreen Creative Company will teach the final session with the youth. The session entitled Filming: Documenting the Shot will explore the various ways to use camera angles and specialty equipment to enhance storytelling. Upon completion, students will be able to test theories by creating a 5-minute short film.
"We are thrilled to partner with TSEJA to offer our members hands-on experience in film and photography,” expressed Sherrell Doby, CEO for Boys & Girls Clubs of the Wiregrass. “Opportunities like these empower our youth to explore creative career paths they might not have considered, sparking both curiosity and confidence. We’re excited to see how these skills can shape their futures.”
TSEJA is excited to bring opportunities to the Wiregrass that will inspire the community with artistic expression. The sessions are an extension of the upcoming JA3M Film Festival taking place on October 26, 2024, at 6 pm inside Sony Hall Auditorium at Troy University Dothan's Everett Hall.
